Isabel Sawhill of the Brookings Institute wrote a smart little article for the NY Times this past weekend. She brought to light the conundrum we face now which is that we are going to have to separate parenting and marriage. We can't MAKE people stay married and often staying married for the kids can have very negative consequences as well. So we need a new parenting deal that protects kids from losing their parents and parents from losing their kids. Since marriage has evolved from socio-economic survival to a romantic ideal, we need to protect kids from the fickle nature of love and romance since they are now the main drivers to the altar now.
