TIMBUKTU Ah was hoping to see see good replies to this. They really need to build some notifications in here so that members are notified of new posts. Anyway- have u tried mediation?? Get a mediator involved first- much cheaper and less oppositional in general. 9 years ago User reported

RAN Yes, or collaborative -- if your finances are at all complex, if one or both of you feels you must have legal representation -- or if there's a real power imbalance. At any rate, just ask everyone you know -- and ask every Lawyer you know -- then make an appt and interview them, as many as you have time for. Many won't charge for an intro/audition talk. 9 years ago User reported

PERILIOUSBEHAVIOR At this point I am in the research phase. I want to get a sense of what the process is like where we live and what the different rights/obligations each of us could potentially have. I haven't told her I want a divorce, I am still 100% certain I do, so meditation is probably a couple of steps away. 9 years ago User reported

RAN Good -- you have time to do your research. Read all you can, talk to as many lawyers/mediators/collaborative experts as you can. Consider starting to track your expenses in detail (if you don't already). Maybe in conjunction with getting your tax info together. You'll need it eventually, and in the meantime the review can help you figure out where to start trimming unnecessary expenses. 9 years ago User reported

PERILIOUSBEHAVIOR I had my first meeting with an attorney. She was super helpful. I am going try to meet with some more over the next few weeks. The attorney I met with said that they frequently set-up clients with mediators. I might try to find someone who just does meditation this week as well... 9 years ago User reported
