Staying married may have long-term benefits. You can elicit much more sympathy from friends over a bad marriage than you ever can from a good divorce. - P. J. O'Rourke

  • strugglecity First of all, let me just say that I love this category is here. Now I don't have to vent at my boyfriend and piss him off or at my friends and make him look bad or at his friend and appear to be (gasp) taking sides against him. That being said, I learned from my last relationship that if you're doing more venting than anything else, if every day he's just making you mad, it's time to bite the bullet and call it quits. 9 years ago   *   4 replies
    • london I TOTALLY agree with you. I was always arguing with my boyfriend every day. It got to the point that I wanted to ask him, "Jeez, do you have to breathe on EVERY breath?" It's like we argued over the smallest things. Eventually we just broke up. 9 years ago
      • strugglecity Yeah, if you're fighting that much, then it's got to be some underlying reason, like you're just not compatible. I'm trying this new thing where I go back to how I felt about him at the beginning of the relationship and it's really working. I want this to last and I really care about him, so yesterday I was extra nice and giving and didn't pick any fights and he was legitimately shocked. He kept asking me "why are you being so nice and happy today? This is so unlike you." Really made me take a step back and look at my usual behavior. • dynamic Hmmm...that's on perspective to view that situation. An additional one could be that one vented when he or she avoided dealing with the underline problem thus missing out on growing opportunities as an individual or couple to resolve problems. Yes, incompatibility could still be the foundational issue, but through finding and realizing these unresolvable issues, coming to that conclusion is faster, in a civil manner and both parties don't waste as much time or create undue bitterness in life. With all that said, I must agree with you that having a place to vent freely without damaging relationships is great. 9 years ago
      • london Thanks... I love getting feedback from another person. What it boils down to is TRUST. We always fight about trust. He cheated on me in the past. Every time he said he was going to the gym, he was going to see a female. I decided that since I cannot trust him that we should just break up. He BEGGED me not to leave him and promised it would never happen again. But I cannot seem to trust him. He deceived me and now I will never love him the same again. 9 years ago
