Community Roots Charter School in Brooklyn, NY has a fantastic program called 'Banana Splits'. It helps kids whose parents are divorced, have a deceased parent or never knew one of their parents. A 3rd grader at the school says: "I like that it helps kids that have a certain situation that other people can't relate to. It's cool to make connections with other kids whose parents are divorced. For example, another kid in the school was going through a divorce and since I had already been through that years before, I was able to give her advice and that felt good. Now I go to Banana Splits just to help other kids and have a banana split at the end of the session."
