Staying married may have long-term benefits. You can elicit much more sympathy from friends over a bad marriage than you ever can from a good divorce. - P. J. O'Rourke

  • plasterdust I feel like Americans are so much more forward with what they want and willing to move on from relationships. Massive generalization, but after an adventure through multiple states in the great USA, I'd say with every customer service encounter, with every conversation, every deep craft beer fueled rant...Canadians are really repressed and hold back their feelings in relationships. Like this weird passive aggressive thing...am I crazy or is there some truth here? American's are more likely to go after what they want than Canadians? No stats, no reliable or valid evidence...but still... 7 years ago   *   3 replies
    • Snapper John This actually might be just a 'vocalising' issue. I am a Brit, I've just split from my wife, very amicably, and I have a new home, my teenage kids are adjusting really well, and we have all rediscovered some happiness. But I don't go blabbing about it. Americans perhaps lack the discretion filter! Not that wearing your heart on your sleeve is bad, it's just we are different cultures. I think you'll find you Canadians are not repressed. You just share a lot of the character reserve endemic in most European societies. So don't feel so alone! 7 years ago
    • Ms. Medusa No stats, no reliable or valid evidence, just personal observation? My personal observation, based on interactions with Canadian family and friends? I would argue that this may be a difference between repressed and reserved. The Canadians in my life are a reserved lot, but not repressed. I would also argue, also based on personal observation, that there are reserved Americans out there as well. We are easy to miss and less likely to divulge even when plied with craft beer. 7 years ago
