Staying married may have long-term benefits. You can elicit much more sympathy from friends over a bad marriage than you ever can from a good divorce. - P. J. O'Rourke

    • jimneycrochet mediation mediation mediation! try it first. will save a TON of money. lawyers have ZERO incentive to settle a case. trust me. 10 years ago
    • izzi I agree with the comment below, about mediation, it will definitely save lots of money and time. Some laywers will recommend a mediator, make sure you do your research and find a mediator that comes recommended. Not sure if there are any on angieslist, but check it out. 10 years ago
    • izzi Oh and another suggestion, there are some states that have free legal advice once a week at a certain court house. I know they do (or did) have such a service in Mass. 10 years ago
    • karenr Also, take a look at your assets and if your mate has a retirement plan/pension. If you guys don't have assets earned during your marriage-like owning a home, savings and investments and kids, then filing yourself is an option. It is the one I took because he gave me custody and he was a loser who couldn't even pay child support. But it is usually more complicated than my situation was. 10 years ago
    • TDOG NOOOOOOOOOO ..... stick it out in mediation! 10 years ago
      • DETROITPINK I completely agree with mediation. My ex and I have spent 2 years with respective lawyers and are now going to a mediator. I wish we would have started there. Swift and Fair. Let everyone move forward. The money spent is ridiculous, but time is a not a renewable resource. 9 years ago
    • want2bhappy I know this is an old thread, but it popped up on treading... My divorce was final last week. We did not use lawyers or mediation. We had two houses, vehicles, a boat, etc. We do not have children. I went (he attended the final one) to free workshop given by our county on how to fill out all of the paperwork. I took the final paperwork to the free clinic, also by the county, to have the lawyer there look over the paperwork to see if the judge would kick it back. I liked that a lot. It helps that the lawyer that gave the classes was also the person at the clinic that looked at our ppwk. Judge signed off. Done. 8 years ago
